Leadership "Don't Do" List

While most leaders are familiar with the concept of a To-Do list, not every leader understands the importance of creating a "Don't Do" list.

In the journey of effective leadership, what you choose not to do can be just as important as what you actively pursue.  Here's my "Leadership Don't Do List" that has been instrumental in my career. I'm hopeful it will spark a desire to create your own list.

Don't Compromise Your Integrity

Your integrity is the foundation of your leadership. Always act ethically and honorably, even when it's difficult. Your team will respect and trust you for it.

Don't Be Mean

Kindness is the number one underrated leadership skill. Leading with kindness fosters a positive work environment, encourages collaboration, and builds strong, loyal teams.

Don't Criticize People Who Aren't Present

If you criticize others behind their backs, everyone will assume you do the same to them. This behavior erodes trust and creates a culture of fear and suspicion. Always address issues directly and constructively.

Don't Micromanage

Micromanaging stifles creativity and drains energy from you and your team. Trust your team members to do their jobs and provide guidance without hovering. If you need to micromanage, it might be time to reassess your hiring decisions or provide additional training.

Don't Just Talk Your Walk

Walk Your Talk. Model the behavior and values you want to see in your organization. Actions speak louder than words, and your team will follow your example more than your directives.

Don't Avoid Difficult Conversations

Everything you want is on the other side of an uncomfortable conversation. Addressing issues head-on with honesty and empathy can prevent minor problems from becoming significant obstacles.

Don't Make Assumptions

Assumptions can lead to misunderstandings and mistakes. Communicate clearly and seek clarification to ensure everyone is on the same page.

Don't Ignore Feedback

You don't have to act on every piece of feedback, but it is your job to seek out and find value in it. Constructive feedback can provide insights for personal and organizational growth.

Don't Resist Change

Adaptability is crucial in today's fast-paced world. Resisting change can hinder progress and innovation. Embrace new ideas and be open to adjusting strategies as needed.

Don't Play Favorites

Favoritism can destroy team unity and morale. To maintain a positive and equitable work environment, treat all team members fairly and consistently.

Don't Isolate Yourself

Great leaders stay connected with their teams and the broader organization. Regularly engage with your team members to understand their challenges, celebrate successes, and provide support.

Don't Stop Learning

The best leaders are lifelong learners. Continuously seek opportunities for professional development and stay updated on industry trends and best practices.

Don't Neglect Self-Care

Leaders often focus so much on their teams that they forget to care for themselves. Prioritize your well-being to maintain your energy, focus, and effectiveness.

Take a few minutes to write your personalized Leadership "Don't Do" List.  Place it somewhere you will see it regularly, and let it serve as a daily reminder to lead well.
